Details:

This book about the history of flight guides readers through Greek mythology and folklore, through the Arabian Nights and even refers to Harry Potter!

Crucially the author tells of real-life stories of men and women in the context of their times: Leonardo da Vinci, who designed the first hang glider and helicopter; George Cayley who discovered the factors of lift, thrust and drag which are fundamental in aircraft design to this day and the Montgolfier brothers among others, who spurred the hot-air balloon craze.

She points to Alexander Graham Bell and his wizard team in Nova Scotia who were responsible for the Silver Dart’s first flight in Canada.

Along the way she weaves stories of entrepreneurial and dashing women pilots who were flight pioneers before the First World War. Dr. Gibbons links us with past and present worlds with references to the moon, Mars and beyond.

This book motivates and has universal appeal. The author’s rich research and meticulous attention to detail show her self professed passion “to share the beauty and extraordinariness of the discovery of flight”.

Come out to hear Jacqueline’s engaging presentation about her new book, "Spread Your Wings: Icarus to 1912."

Books will also be available for sale OR purchase in advance here.
