“We couldn’t do it without our volunteers” is a phrase you hear quite often at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. On any given day, volunteers can be seen assisting in nearly every facet of the Museum’s operation. From engaging with visitors and supporting educational programming to assisting with events and behind-the-scenes activities, volunteers are at the heart of what we do. Volunteers have been an integral part of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum since it was established in 1972, and their dedication, knowledge, and enthusiasm are essential to the Museum’s continued success as a world-class aviation heritage facility.

Volunteer Opportunities

The Museum is proud to offer volunteer opportunities for individuals of all backgrounds and interests, including student volunteers and reenactor volunteers. Each group plays a vital role in helping preserve and share Canada’s rich aviation history.

Student volunteers are an important part of the Museum’s volunteer community. Students will receive credit for volunteer hours, which may be applied toward the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) 40-hour community involvement requirement. While volunteering, students gain hands-on experience in a unique museum and aviation environment and develop valuable life and workplace skills such as teamwork, communication, responsibility, and time management. Student volunteers also gain insight into museum operations, public engagement, and heritage preservation while working alongside knowledgeable staff and experienced volunteers who share a passion for aviation history. These experiences help students build confidence, explore potential career interests, and make meaningful contributions to the Museum.

Reenactor volunteers help bring history to life for visitors of all ages. By portraying military and civilian roles from various periods of aviation history, reenactors add depth and authenticity to the Museum’s programs and special events. Wearing historically accurate uniforms and equipment, reenactor volunteers engage with the public through interpretation and storytelling, helping visitors better understand the people, daily life, and historical context behind the aircraft on display. Their participation enhances educational programs, commemorative events, and community outreach activities, creating memorable and immersive experiences for visitors.

Membership with the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum and completion of a Criminal and Vulnerable Sector Check are required in order to volunteer with the Museum. Volunteers must be 15 years of age or older to participate. Training and orientation are provided to ensure all volunteers feel prepared, supported, and confident in their roles.
