Details:

Prior to December 1940, Canadian newsstands were filled with American comics books with titles such as Superman and Batman, but soon the government passed an act to ban the import of nonessential goods. Canadian publishing companies soon filled the gap with their own versions, with Canadian artists producing over 800 individual issues over the course of the war. By 1947, the economy was back on track and Canadian comics couldn’t compete, ceasing publications. These comics are now very rare, but their importance to the children of wartime in seeing them through a difficult time remains significant.

The collection of comic books on display are generously on loan from a private Hamilton collector.
