The North American TBF Avenger was an American carrier-based torpedo bomber used primarily during World War II. Designed by Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, the TBF Avenger was a key element of American naval aviation during the fighting in the Pacific theater. Entering service in 1942, the aircraft was used to attack surface targets, especially enemy ships. Its three-person crew consisted of a pilot, gunner and operator. The TBF Avenger was armed with a machine gun and could carry torpedoes, bombs and rockets. Its participation in the Battle of Midway in 1942 was crucial to the success of American naval aviation.
