Description: During WWII, John Landers scored 6 victories while flying a P-40 in the Pacific. In 1944 he was sent to Europe where he scored 8.5 victories of which 4.5 were scored flying a P-51D. His total at wars end was 14.5 air-to-air victories and 20 ground victories. This made Landers one of the few pilots to achieve Ace status in both theaters of operation. His P-38, P-40 and P-51 were all named “Big Beautiful Doll”. His P-51D Mustang, 44-72218, WZ-I, was the 192nd produced from a batch of 3,000 ordered the day after D-Day.

The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang was a single-seat World War II fighter aircraft. First flown on October 26, 1940, the P-51 was designed and built in just 117 days. It flew most of its missions as a bomber escort in raids over Germany, helping ensure Allied air superiority from 1944 on. As well as being economical to produce, the P-51 was a fast and durable aircraft.
