James Edgar "Johnnie" Johnson attempted to join the R.A.F. 3 times in 1938 before eventually beginning pilot training in September of 1939.
He was posted to 616 Spitfire Squadron during the Battle of Britain before old injuries sent him to Training Command. He took his first command of No. 610 Squadron in July 1942 and participated in the Dieppe raid. In March 1944 he was given command of Canadian No. 144 Wing, No. 83 Group of the 2nd Tactical Air Force which became No. 144 RCAF (Fighter) Wing, a fighter/bomber unit. By late June Johnson had beaten the standing record of 32 victories and would go on to have a total of 38 and be the top-scoring Allied Ace of the the Second World War. Johnson retired in 1964 and has authored several books on air-fighting and is a leading expert on Second World War air power.
