October 1975 saw delivery of the first USAF A-10A and deployment in March 1976. Built specifically for close ground support the pilot is protected by titanium armor while being covered by a bubble canopy giving a commanding view. On May 4, 2021 A-10C 78-0618 c/n A10-0238 wearing a new heritage paint scheme was unveiled. The aircraft belonged to the 124th FW/190th FS “Skull Bangers” of the Idaho ANG. The paint scheme is of 405190 with a code 8N representing the first Republic P-47 Thunderbolts used by the 124th FW/405th FS in WW II. This special paint scheme is to honor the unit’s 75th anniversary. The aircraft wears a white nose, D-Day invasion stripes as well as WW II era USAF star and bar with the 8N denoting the 405th FS.
