The most significant event of this period was the unification of the Army, Navy and Air Force into the Canadian Forces. The process began in 1963 and was completed by 1968. As a result, the RCAF faded into history and now remains a proud memory.
Canadian Forces (CF) Air Command inherited the roles and upheld the traditions of the RCAF. Air Command's domestic and foreign commitments continued with NATO in Europe, NORAD at home and UN peacekeeping world-wide. Air Command is a major global player in military air transport, with its Hercules aircraft, and in long-range Maritime patrols, with its Aurora aircraft.
In 1991 Air Command fired its first shots in wartime since the Korean War, as Canadian aircrew fought in the Gulf War. Our pilots were flying the CF-18 Hornet.
