Description: First flown in July of 1935, the B-17 Flying Fortress was responsible for 640,000 of the 1.5 million tons worth of bombs dropped on the Nazis during World War II. Among the most prolific of these heavy bombers was "Nine-O-Nine" - a B-17 that flew 140 combat sorties for the 91st Bomb Group, believed to be a Mighty Eight record. The Collings Foundation has an airworthy B-17 Flying Fortress painted in commemoration of the legendary bomber.
