<h2> <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Important Announcement</strong></span></h2>
<p> As part of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum’s 40<sup>th</sup> Anniversary “Salute to Allied Veterans” Airshow, we will be closing the museum on Saturday and Sunday June 16 – 17, 2012.   What this will mean to you is that unless you are an Airshow Performer, or a duly appointed Staff Member with assigned Airshow duties in the museum, the museum will not be open or available to you on Airshow Weekend.</p>
<p> As such we will ask for cooperation from our membership by planning to park on the sod farm and use the provided bus transportation to and from the Airshow that will take you directly to and from the Airshow layout located in the airport infield.  Fortunately based on the lessons we learned from last year’s Airshow a number of changes have been made to improve and streamline the event organization and logistics, including the closure of the museum on the Airshow Weekend. </p>
<p> In closing I appreciate your cooperation, understanding and compliance with procedure for the Airshow Weekend. </p>

<p> As part of our ongoing planning for the 2012 CWH Hamilton Airshow we will restricting the number of performing aircraft ground support crews with Hot Ramp Access for two reasons primarily:</p>
<p> 1. In order to keep the number of persons with Hot Ramp access to only essential flight crews and aircraft ground support crews; and</p>
<p>2.    To free up as many of CWH members and aircraft support crew to assist us in the CWH static aircraft display area on Lima taxiway.</p>
<p> As such if you have not been identified as an essential flight crew or aircraft ground person for your specific aircraft we ask that you please contact Rex as we need a number of CWH members and volunteers in the static aircraft area this year.</p>

<p> There will be a general meeting for all airshow volunteers on Thursday, June 7th at 7:00pm in the CWH hangar.  We highly recommend that you attend this meeting where you will have an opportunity to meet the staff supervisor for the your volunteer area.  The canteen will remain open after 5:00pm should you want to purchase your dinner, or just grab a snack before the meeting. </p>
<p>Volunteer Manuals, waivers and other information / items will be distributed at the meeting.  If you are unable to attend you can pick-up your manual and waiver form from Rex or David Dowd prior to the airshow, or at the Volunteer Admissions tent when you arrive for your duty on the weekend of June 16 &amp; 17.</p>

<p> This week’s feature from the Archives Dept. is a black and white photograph of RCAF ground personnel working on a Cessna Crane Mk.1 while a formation of Cessna Cranes do a fly past.   The Crane began service as an advanced, twin-engine trainer with the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941.   The RCAF  received a total of 826 Cranes, all of which operated as pilot trainers in Western Canada.</p>

<p>This week’s photo from the Archives is a 1945 black and white image of     LAC Dawson installing photo equipment in a Wellington bomber.   The Vickers  Wellington was the most numerous British bomber of the Second World War.   The Wellington was the brainchild of Barnes Wallis, most famous for the bouncing bomb of Dam Buster’s fame.            </p>

<p> CWH volunteer Wally Ozouf passed away in his sleep on Wednesday morning.  Wally was an active volunteer over the years on the CWH ramp, Duty Day activities and   also as a   member of the CWH Colour party at the annual Remembrance Day Service. </p>

<h2> CWH Board Member an Aviation Hall of Fame Inductee for 2012</h2>
<p> Congratulations to CWH Board of Directors member Dr. Dafydd (Dave) Williams on his induction into the 2012 Canada Aviation Hall of Fame.   Born in Saskatoon in 1954, Dave is a pilot, medical doctor and a retired Canadian Astronaut of outstanding skill, management ability and accomplishment in his work with the Canadian Space Agency.   He was appointed Director of NASA’s Space and Life Sciences Directorate, a rare accomplishment for a non-American astronaut.  Dave made two flights on the Space Shuttle, 1998 and 2007, and in the second was involved in three spacewalks for installations at the International Space Station.</p>

<p> On April 17, 2012, at approximately 12 noon during the initial flight of the Lancaster for the season, while conducting recurrent crew training with the  Lancaster Chief Pilot Don Schofield and Museum Chief Pilot Leon Evans, had the outer portion of the right wing tip compromised during the flight.  The crew declared an emergency and immediately  returned to Hamilton Airport for an uneventful landing with no further damage to the aircraft and no injuries to the crew.</p>
<p>In discussions with the Transportation Safety Board, we have proceeded with our internal investigation of the occurrence.  The preliminary examination    indicates the outer right wing tip lower attachment bracket failed which allowed the outer wing tip to move in flight.  At the present time, further examination to determine mode of failure of this bracket, the proper repair scheme and new inspection criteria for both outer wing tip attachments is ongoing.  We have already shared all our findings with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.</p>

<p> This week’s feature from the Archives Dept. is a black and white photo of a military parade taken on VJ Day in Fareham Hants, England.   The Japanese   surrendered to the Allied Forces on August 14, 1945.   The next day, Wednesday, August 15, the world celebrated VJ  Day (Victory over Japan). Japan formally surrendered on September 2, 1945 at a ceremony in Tokyo Bay on the  USS Missouri.</p>

Of the 133 airmen that set out on the raid, 29 were Canadian.</p>

<p>It is with heavy hearts that we must announce the passing of a very special man in all our lives. Gerry passed away Monday, April 2, 2012 at Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital at the age of 80. He was the beloved husband of the late Viola (Wilson).Cherished father of Luanne Coffey (Larry), Sandra Koch (deceased) (Jim) and Donna Nelson. Respected grand- father of Trevor Coffey (Mary), Ryan Coffey (Trisha,) David Koch (Jessica) and Danielle Taylor (A.J.). Proud &#8220;Poppie&#8221; of Adrian and Melina Coffey.  Blessed with his lifelong friend John (Jack) Gilbert and his very special friend Marie Ballantine.  Cremation has taken place.   A Celebration of Gerry&#8217;s Life was held at St. Luke&#8217;s Anglican Church, 1371 Elgin Street, Burlington, on Thursday, April 5, 2012 at 12:00 noon.  Interment at Hamilton Cemetery, Hamilton. In lieu of flowers, donations to McMaster Children&#8217;s Hospital would be sincerely appreciated.   A special thanks to Dr. Mahdi, also the staff on 5 south and 6th floor at Joseph Brant Hospital.</p>

<h3> CWH’s Latest Acquisition</h3>
<p>A Beechcraft CT-134 Musketeer is now the  latest acquisition by the Canadian Warplane   Heritage Museum.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.warplane.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/0141796.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1392" title="0141796" src="http://www.warplane.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/0141796.jpg" alt="" width="575" height="370" /></a></p>
<p>They were first purchased by the Canadian Forces in 1970 to replace the capable but increasingly difficult to maintain Chipmunk ab-initio trainers. CWH&#8217;s Musketeer (CAF #134222) has been in storage dismantled in Merrickville, Ontario for several years and was discovered through an ad in Kijiji.   Although it doesn&#8217;t look as in good shape as in this photo taken at CFB Moose Jaw in 1980, and supplied by photographer John Davies, the aircraft is fairly complete.   The Musketeer is scheduled to arrive at CWH on Saturday April 7th and might be  assembled in its unrestored condition for display at the Hamilton Airshow.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;"> <strong>A Tragic Loss</strong></p>
<p> Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum is saddened to hear of the passing of Howard Pardue earlier  today.  He was killed flying his Bearcat.   Howard and his Bearcat was a regular participant in the early Hamilton airshows.   Howard was also a CWH Life Member.</p>

<p> This week’s feature from the  Archives Department is a black and white photo of Bradley Edward (Ted) Argue in uniform.  Ted      Argue took his initial flight training at Mount Hope in 1940 when he was 18 years old.  By the time he was 19, he was stationed in South East  England with 403 Squadron flying Spitfires.  In mid April 1942, Ted was shot down over Abbeville, France.  Though badly injured he survived his bailout from 26,000 feet and spent a considerable time in a German Luftwaffe hospital in St. Omer before being sent to a POW camp.  Due to his injuries, he was considered non-combatant and in 1943, was returned to Canada on one of the last Prisoner of War exchanges in the west during WWII.</p>

<p> This week’s feature from the Archives Department is a black and white  photograph of a North American (Canadair) Sabre. Modelled after North American’s F-86A, the prototype Sabre 1 (19101) made its first test flight at RCAF Station Dorval on August 9, 1950 piloted by Canadair’s chief test pilot, Al Lilly, after being towed on public streets from the Canadair factory in      Cartierville to Dorval airport.    The aircraft was mounted on a pedestal in front of 700 Wing of the RCAF Association in Edmonton, Alberta from July 14, 1965 to 2009 (at least).</p>

<p> WHIMIS training sessions for CWH staff and volunteers will be taking place on the following date:</p>

<p> CWH&#8217;s Cornell (RCAF 10835, C-GCWC) was manufactured in 1943 and was the 741st Cornell manufactured by Fleet Aircraft of Fort Erie, Ontario.   It was taken on strength May 17, 1943 and served at No. 3 Flying Instructor School at  Arnprior, Ontario, and No. 11 EFTS at Cap-de-la-Madeleine,  Quebec.   It was take&#8230;n off strength February 12, 1946.  After the war it had a number of owners and during the 1950’s it operated out of the Hamilton  Airport.  Its last flight was in June of 1960.  In 1961 it was grounded due to delamination in the centre     section spar. In 1976 it was located on a farm near Carp Ontario and was        acquired by CWH.   In 1979 a group of retired Fleet Aircraft employees guided by Bruce Mac Ritchie undertook a restoration project where they brought it back to flying condition as a project for the 50th anniversary of the company. In 1981 the aircraft was returned to the CWH as serial number 10835, the 1,000th Cornell built by Fleet Aircraft and aptly titled “Spirit of Fleet II.’</p>

<p> This week’s feature from the Archives Department is a B&amp;W photo of the Avro Lancastrian VH742.   In 1943, Victory Aircraft converted a   Lancaster Mk X for civil transport duties with Trans Canada Airlines which resulted in eight additional Lancaster X’s  being converted.   These aircraft were powered by Packard built Merlin 38 engines and featured a lengthened, streamlined nose and tail cone.</p>

<p> WHIMIS training sessions for CWH staff and volunteers will be taking place on the following dates:</p>

<p> Volunteers and staff can sign-up for either training session.  Sign-up sheets are posted on the Health &amp; Safety Board located by the Bolingbroke Restoration area.</p>

<p>Moving into 1976, CWH is now at 125 members. Cessna Crane CF-FGF is   acquired from Doug Wardle of Orleans, Ontario. Shortly after its difficult ferry flight to Hamilton, it is repainted in a camouflage scheme representative of a few Cranes that served as squadron hacks in active squadrons of the Home War Establishment on the west coast of Canada during WWII. The newly painted Crane flew in the 1976 Hamilton International Air Show, but soon after was grounded for a complete rebuild after the discovery of wood rot.   Photo: Jim Hoover.</p>
